Matthieu Mantanus is a swiss-belgian pianist, conductor, popularizer and composer, co-artistic director for the Antonio Mormone International Prize and former associate conductor to Lorin Maazel.
Alongside his career as a pianist which led to his playing in Sala Verdi in Milan with the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, he decided to begin a career in conducting, studying in Rome with Bruno Aprea. In his capacity as a volunteer assistant, he studied under the master Giuseppe Sinopoli, and attended numerous master classes, including with Jorma Panula (Schleswig-Holstein, Salzau) and Gianluigi Gelmetti (Accademia Chigiana, Siena). Invited by Lorin Maazel as a fellow in 2009 at the Castleton Festival, he became Maazel's assistant in Italy and in Washington for a production by Bari's Petruzzelli theatre, and finally became his associate conductor in Virginia.
From 2009, after four years working at Milano Symphony Orchestra “La Verdi”, conducting number of outdoor and family concerts, he made his debut with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, and became for 5 years principal conductor of the orchestra of the City of Ravenna. Since then he conducted Cagliari's Teatro Lirico, Como Sociale Theatre with the Orchestra 1813, Filarmonica Toscanini, Pomeriggi Musicali at Milan's Dal Verme theatre and Tito Schippa's Orchestra in Lecce, and contemporary opera at Biennale Musica 2016 in Venezia.
He is since a long time very committed on innovation and making music available to everyone. Leading his Jeans Symphony Orchestra, he presented during 2014-2015 season five short Prime Time talking concerts on Italian TV RAI 3. The year after, he presented the operatic and symphonic season of Italian cultural public channel RAI starting with live Première in la Scala.
As an author, he wrote “Una giornata eroica” (Feltrinelli, 2009), “Beethoven e la ragazza con I capelli blu” (Mondadori 2016) and "Rossini!" (Feltrinelli 2018).
In 2013 he founds the JeansMusic lab production to realize his innovative music shows: Revolution! (2014), Intimacy (2015-2016 season), BachBox (2018), Baroque Reloaded (2019). Together with this last production the JeansMusic records label is born. Naturally curious and creative, with the music of BachBox he takes his first steps into the electronic music world, elaborating a brand new, surprising and very personal musical language to express himself.
